Troy believes in

Lakefront Access, Open Spaces and Parks

The 48th Ward deserves stronger protections for our lakefront, more accessible green space, and expanded access to parks, beaches, and natural areas for everyone.

The proposed 600-unit Fern Hill development at 5959 N. Sheridan Road raises serious concerns about public access, environmental protection, traffic congestion, and pressure on neighborhood infrastructure. More importantly, it threatens the intent of Chicago's 1973 Lakefront Protection Ordinance (LPO), which was created to preserve the lakefront for public use and enjoyment.

Troy opposes the zoning changes approved by the current alderwoman that could allow this project to move forward. She believes any development on this site must protect the public interest and preserve access to one of Chicago's most valued public assets.

The public's claim to these lakefront properties is also rooted in a broader legal and historical framework, including the original treaties with the Potawatomi, the Burnham Plan, the Illinois Public Trust Doctrine, the Lakefront Protection Ordinance, and applicable Illinois laws and court decisions.

Troy believes protecting the LPO is not about opposing growth. It is about safeguarding public access, and honoring Chicago's longstanding commitment to preserving our natural resources, and ensuring that our lakefront remains a public asset for generations to come.

As Alderperson, Troy Will:

  • Oppose private development that weakens public lakefront protections.

  • Expand public access to Lake Michigan, parks, beaches, and green space.

  • Support a community-driven planning process for major lakefront and open-space decisions.

  • Identify appropriate locations for affordable housing and responsible development that do not compromise public lakefront land.

  • Protect parks, public land, and neighborhood quality of life for current and future generations.

Once public lakefront land is lost to private development, it cannot be reclaimed.
